Summing Up 2007, movie-wise, 2007 was a year which once again saw all the brilliant movie execs in Hollywood totally outwit themselves. Eager to bank on past successes, they continued to make sequels that were incredibly more boring than the originals. Pirates of the Carribean: At Wit's End, is a perfect example. Another case in point: Beowolf. This movie so desperately wanted to capitalize on the pre-summer blockbuster 300, but for some reason fell flat on its furry face. Who'd have thunk? Counting on movie stars to rally the masses proved just as dubious. Just ask Tom Cruise (Lions for Lambs) or Halle Berry (Perfect Stranger, Things We Lost In The Fire). And the Summer blockbusters like Spider Man 3 and Shrek the Third were underwhelming.

No Country For Old Men This has got to be the best movie the Coen Brothers have made since "Fargo". It skips along with a fascinating pace tracing the steps of a young Texan who stumbles onto a cache of drug money and tries to outwit a psychopathic killer who is following him. The pyschopathic killer is played by Javier Bardem -- who, by the way, turns in an Oscar-winning performance as a truly chilling villain. P.S.: It isn't just Javier's act that's frightening, it's also his hairstyle.
Ratatouille This Pixar film is their best ever. Rather than rely on "hip" jokes, the movie leans heavily on beautiful artwork and classic plots. Ratatouille is a return to the classic Disney age of Cinderella, Bambi and Snow White And the Seven Dwarfs. It's a movie that will live for quite a long time.
The Kite RunnerAfter spending years in California, Amir returns to his homeland in Afghanistan to help his old friend Hassan, whose son is in trouble.
Away From Her This is a wonderful story about love and devotion. It follows the lives of a mature married couple, one of whom, the wife, develops Alzheimer's Disease. Canada's own Sarah Polley directed this "wise" movie which brings Julie Christie back to the big screen and features the talents of Gordon Pinsent (another Canadian legend).
Eastern Promises Canada's David Cronenburg directed this chilling tale of the Russian Mafia -- and how its leader tries desperately to cover up his rape of a young girl.
Juno This is another Canadian movie starring Ellen Page, a wise-cracking 16 year old pregnant girl on the lookout for the right adoptive parents for her baby.
Zodiac This is a sprawling movie about a rape and murder in California -- which portrays the real-life struggles behind a murder investigation -- highlighting that nothing is perfect -- and sometimes someone can get away with murder.
Sweeney Todd Tim Burton plays the darkest musical ever completely straight. Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter turn in credible performances.
The Lives Of Others This is a German film about espionage and wiretapping -- but it paints a much bigger picture about the importance of art and why we should choose freedom over security.
Letters From Iwo Jima This is a film that follows the efforts of Japanese solders defending Iwo Jima.
